Q: What is an insights community?

A: An insights community is a group of individuals, with similar interests and experiences, who have voluntarily chosen to participate in online research studies about various topics related to their common interests.

Q: What is the Idea Lab, sponsored by Skype?

A: The Idea Lab is an invitation-only community of Skype users brought together to share experiences, opinions and ideas about communication and how it is changing the way we live, work and play. As part of the Idea Lab, members will have the chance to share their thoughts on how we can make Skype even better. Here, members can take surveys, join discussion forums, live chats and many other creative activities that will help us learn more about their expectations and needs.

Q: How many surveys do I have to complete?

A: We'll be hosting activities throughout each month so please take part in the ones that interest you most – some will take just a couple minutes and others may be a little more in-depth. We encourage participation in as many surveys and discussions as you are invited to take. In order to be considered an active member of the Idea Lab we ask that you participate in at least three activities per year.

Q: How do I complete a survey?

A: You will be e-mailed a unique URL address for each survey. Simply click on that URL or cut and paste it into a web browser of your choice and complete the survey form online. Or, you can also access your surveys when you log in to the Idea Lab website (the URL for each survey appears under the section, "Current activities"). Survey length is closely managed to minimize impact on your time.

Q: How long will I have to complete each survey?

A: You will typically have anywhere from 48 hours to one week to complete each survey.

Q: How do I see if there are any new surveys that I can take?

A: Once you're logged into the Idea Lab website, you can find all surveys that are available and ready for you to take on your member page under the section titled "current activities." Alternatively, you can click on the "all activities" tab in the top navigation bar to be taken to the surveys page.

Q: How do I change my email address or password?

A: Once you're logged into the Idea Lab website (, you can edit your profile information by clicking on the gear icon next to your name at the top of the page. Here you can update your email address and/or your password.

Q: What information is required to become a panel member?

A: A brief member profile is the only information required for joining the panel. Your member profile will include basic contact information and vital data for classification purposes only – e.g., gender, age, communication-related information, etc. Panel members who wish to participate in other programs such as focus groups or other special events may be asked to provide additional information.

Q: Will my profile information be sold to other companies?

Q: How long will I remain on the panel?

A: You may remain on the panel as long as you choose to participate in at least three surveys per year. Members may remove themselves from the panel.
